IGCSE English as a Second Language: Syllabus Overview

Paper 1: Reading and Writing

70% of grade, 60 marks, 2 hours, externally assessed

Paper 2: Listening

30% of grade, 40 marks, 50 minutes, externally assessed

Paper 3: Speaking

Marking from 1-5 (5 is the lowest, and 1 is the highest), 40 marks, 10-15 minutes, internally assessed (later externally moderated)

Questions of Paper 1 (4 reading, 2 writing)

1. Comprehension, 6-7 questions, 8 marks

2. Comprehension (Matching), 9 marks

3. Note taking, 2-3 questions, 7 marks

4. Multiple Choice Questions comprehension, 6 questions, 6 marks

5. Email Writing (Informal), Word Limit 120-160, 15 marks

6. Article/Report/Review Writing (Formal), Word Limit 120-160, 15 marks

Questions of Paper 2 (5 exercises, 40 Multiple Choice Questions)

1. Picture Multiple Choice Questions, 8 recordings, 8 marks

2. Short Recordings, 5 recordings, 10 marks

3. Monologue, 8 marks

4. Matching, 6 marks

5. Interview, 8 marks

Questions of Paper 3 (will be recorded)

1. Intro (1 minute), Name + Candidate Number

2. Warm Up (1-2 minutes)

3. Interview (2-3 minutes), questions will be asked on one specific

topic

4. Short Talk (1 minute preparation, 3-4 minutes speaking), a topic will be given on a card, and you need to discuss the topic and the options on the card for 3-4 minutes, but you will have 1 minute to gather your points and prepare

5. Discussion (3-4 minutes), 4-5 questions will be asked
