CIE Mandarin Chinese (0547)

IGCSE Guidance for Mandarin Chinese 0547

Details of the Assessment

Under Mandarin Chinese, the Cambridge exam board assigns each student to sit four papers at the end of the two-year IGCSE course: Listening (Paper 1), Reading (Paper 2), Speaking (Paper 3), and Writing (Paper 4). Each paper is equally weighted (25%) toward your final grade.

Paper 1: Listening

Duration: ~45 minutes

Marks: 40

● Candidates will listen to several short and longer Mandarin recordings and complete comprehension tasks such as multiple-choice, matching, and short-answer questions.

TIPS:

● You will have a few minutes before each section to read the questions — use this time wisely.

Do not translate every word — focus on identifying key information such as time, numbers, locations, and opinions.

● For longer questions (especially final sections), pay attention to tone, emotion, and key conjunctions like 因为 (because), 但是 (but), 所以 (therefore).

Listen carefully to both playbacks. The second playback often helps you confirm tricky details.

● Keep a personal vocabulary list of common listening words (e.g., dates, locations, verbs of movement, expressions of opinion).

● When practising with past papers:

○ Write down unfamiliar vocabulary and whether it suggests a positive or negative tone (e.g., 高兴 vs. 难过).

○ Practice translating key phrases into English to check comprehension.

Paper 2: Reading

Duration: 1 hour

Marks: 45

● Candidates read several short passages in Mandarin and answer comprehension questions, including multiple choice, matching, and brief written responses in Chinese.

TIPS:

Questions 1–3: Aim to complete quickly (within 8–10 minutes) to secure easy marks.

Questions 4–6: Expect longer texts — answers will follow the order of the passage.

○ Learn to identify question words (谁, 什么, 哪里, 为什么, 什么时候) quickly.

Verb conjugation (time words) and correct measure words are crucial.

○ Learn sentence patterns often used in mark schemes (e.g., “虽然…但是…”, “除了…以外…”).

● For matching tasks, translate keywords into English before pairing to avoid confusion.

● Review past paper mark schemes to understand how short-answer responses should be phrased — brevity and accuracy matter more than length.

Paper 3: Speaking

Duration: 10–12 minutes

Marks: 40

● Candidates complete three parts:

1. Role play (5 marks per mini-task) — practical, short answers only.

2. Topic presentation (1–2 minutes) — prepared speech on a familiar topic. 3. General conversation on two further topics chosen by the examiner.

TIPS:

Role Play

● Give short, clear, and grammatically correct answers.

● Always answer in full sentences, not single words.

● If you don’t understand, ask politely for repetition:

➜ 请再说一遍。 (Please say that again.)

Topic Presentation

● Choose a topic you enjoy (e.g., 我的爱好, 我最喜欢的假期, 我的学校生活).

● Memorize 3–5 advanced phrases (e.g., 我对很有兴趣, 如果有机会, 我希望将来 ).

● Practice linking ideas with connectives: 而且, 虽然但是, 因为所以.

General Conversation

● Extend answers naturally — always add reasons or opinions (因为所以我觉得 ).

● Show off a range of tenses (past, present, future).

● Invent details if necessary — fluency and grammar matter more than truth.

● Avoid overthinking or pausing for too long; focus on tone and clarity.

Paper 4: Writing

Duration: 1 hour 15 minutes

Marks: 45

● Candidates complete three writing tasks:

1. Form-filling task

2. Short writing task (~60–80 characters)

3. Extended writing task (~120–150 characters) – letter, email, article, or diary.

TIPS:

● Learn topic-specific vocabulary and set sentence patterns to use flexibly. Example:

○ 我觉得因为(I think… because…)

○ 如果有机会,我想(If I have a chance, I want to…)

(…is more… than…)

Accuracy matters — correct characters and tones are essential.

● Stay close to the word count; too short = missing points, too long = mistakes.

● Cross out each bullet point after covering it.

● Add opinions and reasoning to raise your level to A*.

● Use a mix of past, present, and future tenses in the final question.

● Learn to use connectives to make your writing flow naturally (而且, 所以, 因为, 虽然, 但是).
