2.1 Elements, compounds, and mixtures


An element is a pure substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means. 

For example: sulfur, potassium, etc


A compound is a pure substance made up of two or more elements that are chemically combined. 

For example: potassium sulfate, sulfur dioxide

 

A mixture is a combination of two or more substances that are not chemically combined.

For example: sand in water
