Paper 1 Walkthrough
This guide provides a detailed walkthrough for IGCSE Paper 1 (Reading). Paper 1 of the Cambridge IGCSE English - First Language (0500) is a Reading paper that lasts 2 hours and is worth 80 marks, making up 50% of the final grade. It consists of three sections based on two unseen passages. In Section A, students answer comprehension and vocabulary questions on Passage A, including a summary question that tests their ability to identify and rephrase key points. Section B focuses on a different text (Passage B), where students write a summary using their own words, based on specific lines or ideas. Section C assesses the writer’s use of language and its effect, requiring students to analyze style, tone, and literary devices.
General Strategy
1. Time Management: You have just over 1 minute per question. Don't get stuck—if unsure, mark the question and return if time allows.
2. No Negative Marking: Always attempt every question. An educated guess is better than leaving it blank.
3. Scan and Eliminate: Read the question carefully and eliminate obviously wrong answers first.
4. Circle Key Words: Focus on words like “always”, “never”, “most”, “least”, “correct”, or “incorrect”.
Tips by Question Type
Q1 (a–f): Comprehension & Vocabulary
• Read carefully and follow instructions (e.g., “own words”).
• Don’t lift from the text unless allowed.
• Use full sentences and infer when needed.
• For vocabulary, read around the word to guess the meaning.
Q1(g): Summary
• Stick to the line range.
• Pick key points, paraphrase, and avoid repetition.
• Write a clear, concise paragraph.
• Don’t analyse or include your opinion.
Q2: Summary from Passage B
• Identify relevant points from the given lines.
• Use your own words throughout.
• Write in paragraph form.
• Stay factual and neutral.
Q3: Writer’s Effect (Language Analysis)
• Use Point–Evidence–Explanation. (PEE(L))
• Focus on imagery, tone, and vocabulary.
• Explain how the language affects the reader.
• Be specific — avoid vague phrases like “makes it interesting.”
General Tips
• Time guide: ~40 min (Section A), ~30 min (B), ~50 min (C).
• Underline key words in questions.
• Plan your summary answers.
• Leave time to check grammar and clarity.
Common Pitfalls
• Lifting too much from the text — especially in summary questions; always use your own words where required.
• Vague language analysis — avoid saying things like “it sounds nice” or “it’s descriptive” without explaining how or why it’s effective.
• Ignoring the question focus — writing irrelevant background or personal opinion instead of answering the specific question.
• Rushing and misinterpreting simple questions.
• Forgetting to check the whole question before answering.
What to Bring and Exam Day Tips
• Bring 2 pens, 2 pencils, a ruler, an eraser, and a calculator if allowed (to easily calculate your words, so that you are sure you have not exceeded the limit).
• Arrive early and stay calm. Read through the instructions carefully.
• Try to complete all questions within the instructed time.
