Use Text A.

9 marks in total.


Identify:

  • How the writer creates effect and influences the reader.

  • Devices, language, imagery used.

  • How thoughts/feelings are expressed.


Instructions:


  1. Read the Questions Carefully.


  1. Reread Text A.


  1. Answer the Questions in order.


  1. Question 2(a) to 2(e):


  • Pay attention to command words; most of the words will ask about the writer’s intention.

  • Identify and explain literary devices if present.

  • Explain the phrases fully.

  • Always link back to what the writer (tác giả) is trying to achieve.


Command Words in Questions which link to the writer’s use of language:


  • Describe: Diễn tả.


  • Imply/Insinuate: Ám chỉ.


  • Evoke: Gợi tả.


Literary Devices to pay attention to:


  • Metaphor: Ẩn dụ.


  • Repetition: Điệp ngữ.


  • Rhyme: Gieo vần.


  • Simile: So sánh.


  • Personification: Nhân hóa.


Verbs to explain your answers:


  • Emphasize: Nhấn mạnh.


  • Indicate: Thể hiện.


  • Express: Diễn đạt.


  • Imply: Ám chỉ.


  • Use: Sử dụng.


  1. Question 2(f):


  •  Look for the specific paragraphs mentioned.


  • Explain 3 ideas: Use of language (cách sử dụng ngôn ngữ), hidden meaning.


  • Make 3 different inferences.


  • Explain fully.


Exam Tips:

  • Explain your ideas clearly.


  • Always link back to what the writer/author is trying to achieve.


  • Make inferences.


  • Focus on hidden meaning.


  • Consider the context for every sub-question.


  • Spend approximately 20 minutes on Question 2, and this includes double-checking your answers.
